WordPress Portfolio

Posted: February 1, 2014 in Uncategorized

Just started building my own website using WordPress themes. I chose spun as it is very simple and subtle. I changed some features and added some plugins for backup, photo galleries and for security against spammers. It is still under construction but there are contents already like my school projects from Noroff and some of my photos. I hope to add more as I continue to sharpen my skills in design and photography.

I decided to do another photo essay which used a subject who’s totally a stranger. My previous subject was my son and unfortunately, it is not allowed.

I chose Aling (Mrs.) Susan who is a broom vendor in Cavite Philippines. She sells broom on the road just outside their compound gate. I usually drive by that road and buy a broom every time I visit my home in Cavite and along the road, several vendors like her can be found selling all sorts of crafts. It was my first time to approach a subject to be photographed, no, it was my first time to photograph and use a total stranger as a subject. I have approached others but due to skepticism, which I very well understand and also saddens me, I was turned down every time. Aling Susan had her reservations and doubts but agreed after I showed her my school ID and explained my purpose and what’s the project all about. Aside from the obvious reason that this is my project and to deepen my photography skills, I also wanted to know the story behind road vendors and share it to the world. I always wonder how they manage to get by financially selling their goods like brooms.

My project is a portraiture photo essay and this is Aling Susan’s portrait as a road vendor.

Working with WordPress

Just done with all mandatory assignments, next is making my online portfolio. This weeks learning activity is:

“Firstly you   need to download and install WordPress using Dreamweaver. Then publish it to   your Noroff hosting account. Create a subfolder if you wish to avvoid conflicts with previous websites.

After all the   “admin” is complete, you can start having some fun.        Choose and download   a theme that best suits you and install it. Then customise this theme in   order to create a portfolio website for yourself.”

I didn’t use Dreamweaver for this activity but used FileZilla as what was used in the video tutorial from Lynda.com. I have watched several times and downloaded WP several times too. The downloading itself was easy since I just followed the tutorial, If I hadn’t have the problem from the ‘host,’ I would have just downloaded it and got on with customizing my site. So I gained more from losing a little time. In fact, I have been behind my assignments but I have been using my time learning and researching…it is a gain!

Here is my customize wordpress site, nothing in there yet but a single photo, added pages, got my navigation menu and changed the background.

Amidst the chaos and tragedy that is happening in the Philippines, life must continue. So here is the next part of the dog food project I am working on…POS or point of sale. Since my dog food product is homemade and will not be found in your ordinary store, the POS will consist of brochures in pet shops, online ads and its own website and also vans/trucks.

While I was working on my point of sale materials, I realized that I have missed a part of infograph/brochure making part of the project. So I made another brochure last night and an infograph tonight. Also posting some of my sketches for the labeling and packaging.

Dog Food Packaging

Posted: October 22, 2013 in Uncategorized

Continuing on my project for the dog food product, here are some sketches for the physical packaging and some more sketches for the stickers. I have decided to go for wood packaging and made a mock-up one using cartons. I am still pondering what material to use for the handle but straw would do for now.  My packaging story would be dog food which is ecologic, homemade and ingredients from local farmers. Environmental, traditional, familiar are some keywords associated with it. The label design would be next on the list.

Creative Workflow

Highlight three of the thumbnail ideas that you consider the best options and state why. Hand in an A4 with visuals of the three chosen thumbnails; include reasons for choosing each of these three options.

3 chosen sketches:

I like the combination of the complex lines of G in contrast with the word POOCH which used simple thin lines, the G also represents the green part of the product with its color and leafy design.  focus1

I like the playfulness  focus2

I like the concept of movement focus3

This will be my temporary final (temporary final!) logo. One said this is clean, one said it’s familiar, another said it’s techie and impersonal. So not so good review 🙂 I will still be working on this logo and will post my updates!
